Checker: Out of Business

Checker: Out of Business

Who the hell knew that Checker still existed? Like, you know, the cab company. We were at first excited to hear the name, and then we learned we were hearing it because the company had declared bankruptcy after being in business for 87 years. What’s next, the Big Three having serious financial problems? Oh wait.

Checker stopped building taxicabs 25 years ago, but is a supplier to the OEMs, doing metal stamping and some welded assemblies. They supply the faltering Big Three and have become the seventh supplier in the past year to wave the white flag. The company employs 250 people in the Kalamazoo, Michigan, area.

Here’s the weird part. The COO of the company, cited the following reasons for filing for protection: Rising raw material prices, less demand from their core customers, and, here’s the weird part, a desire to lower wages uncompetitive with already bankrupt suppliers. Say what?

Hopefully they can get their ship straightened out. While they are doing that we’re going to order another frosty 22oz mug.
