Every year on the Monday night before SEMA, Chevrolet puts on a cool party where they debut all their special cars for the SEMA Show. Sure you can see them at the show, but this is a special deal with food and drinks, and the ability to walk around them and talk to the movers and shakers at Chevrolet about each project car. Dave Ross, Jamie Meyer, and all kinds of other team members are on hand to visit with. This year it was Camaros, Corvettes, Colorados, and Silverados oh my, and we dug several of them.
Of course you have to love the COPO Camaro, and although the graphics on it this year are polarizing, we found out why from Dave Ross. Dave told us that the COPO has always been subtle, and about going fast, not about crazy looks. But the guys at Ford have been doing crazy graphics packages on Cobra Jet Mustangs for a while, so the design team decided why not and threw some cool at this COPO.
Under the hood is the big blower package, and for the first time ever Chevrolet even dressed up the engine with Chevrolet Performance valve covers, and a couple other doo dads to make it look even racier that that blower makes it.
For you Corvette freaks out there, here’s the new Corvette Z06 Convertible. Yep, we said CONVERTIBLE! According to Dave Ross, the reason that GM engineers agreed to put together a Z06 Convertible, for the first time ever, is because this new C7 Chassis is so good that it doesn’t need a roof to stay stiff and take full advantage of the Z06’s increased power and handling. Now you can have your convertible Vette and Z06 all in one.
Another Corvette we dug, was this spruced up Z51 that was owned and designed by KISS frontman Paul Stanley. The two tone actually works on this thing, and the color is much more red in real life. We’d take a couple inches out of the ride height, put a couple doo dads on it, and get it on. Would you? Also note the black surrounds on the tail lights. A little like KISS makeup don’t you think?
There were several trucks on hand, and some of you readers might argue, but the “Avalanche” Silverado was one that we really liked. It’s completely a concept, but GM is seeing real pressure from customers who bought them in previous years and are ready for a new truck. They want an Avalanche, and with the good sales numbers they had before, and the cool features of this one, we think it is a winner. The interior on this Silverado is straight out of the High Country, aka Chevrolet’s version of the Denali, and is ultra plush and cool.
Jimmie Johnson, yeah that Jimmie Johnson, was part of one of Chevrolet’s cool celebrity collaboration cars and helped design this cool looking C3 Corvette. What was funny about it was the fact that Jimmie was apparently tough to deal with on the project because he was really looking for a car that looked “stock”. Chevrolet’s design team didn’t want the 1971 Corvette to look too stock, and were happy to help push Jimmie in the direction of building today’s version of what Chevrolet was putting out then. We really like the subtle color choices, trim that is painted dark instead of chromed, and of course the LT1 that is stuffed under the hood. And who would have thought that the hood vents from a new C7 would look so good on a C3? This is definitely another one that we like. Note that the big diameter rally wheels actually have trim rings on them, they are just the same dark charcoal that is on the bumpers and trim. You actually had to look twice to really see them, and we like that.
The Camaro contingent was also supported by a new SS that, while cool, looked fairly mundane in comparison to most of the other rides on display. We don’t have a big opinion one way or the other on the stripe. What do you think?
If you haven’t seen the all new Chevrolet Colorado, here it is. Well sorta. This one is tuned up a bit, but it’s the new Z71 Colorado and it definitely a tough little truck. With over 300 horsepower coming from it’s V6, this thing moves.
We dig GM Suv’s, specifically Suburbans. I’ve owned several, and pretty much always had one growing up. Until just last week I owned two. When the Tahoe came out, it was an immediate hit for those that wanted a shorter version of the Suburban. Don’t get me started on which one is better and why, but know that they are both nice trucks to own. This Tahoe was as factory looking as could be, although we’re sure there are some subtle things that you can’t get just yet. We’d drive it.
Rounding out the truck showing were these two beasts. The one with the yellow stripe and motocross bike out back was designed by Ricky Carmichael, and is one unique Colorado. The Silverado Z71 Polaris ACE+ below that is riding high on 33″ tires on 22″ wheels and carries a cool Polaris RAZR in the bed. The graphics are in your face, and this one might appeal to folks who want their UTV fetish to carry over to their truck as well.
The stripe on the Camaro looks to cut the front open and enhance the excessive thickness of the front of the car.
Colorado is a tough looking truck.
My legs are all wobbly when I hear JIMMIE JOHNSON is designing cars. NOT! The stands at Texas Sunday looked to be half full…design a fix for that JIMMIE.
