Conspiracy Theory: NASCAR Racers Johnson and Knaus Must be Cheating

Cheating in NASCAR has taken on many forms over the years, from subtle to totally blatant, from Junior Johnson’s “banana” Holly Farms Ford modified for better aerodynamics to Darrell Waltrip’s crew chief rigging the car to carry and then release buckshot on the track to get it through the scales at legal weight. A column on bleacherreport.com seems to be hot on the idea that Jimmie Johnson and Chad Knaus have the NASCAR tech intelligencia fooled right now.

Offering no concrete ideas about how exactly Johnson’s car has survivied four straight trips to the NASCAR tech skunkworks for post race inspection, the author points at some circumstantial evidence on the track. How is Johnson able to clearly out-accelerate guys on the same engine program, and why hasn’t he run a super speedway restrictor plate race in forever?

The racer in us says because they are smarter and better than everyone else at the current time, but that’s just us. Jumping right to the “cheat” card is pretty lame in our book although Knaus has been known to get “innovative” when necessary over his career.

Ever been racing in a series that seems to be dominated, at least for a time, by a single car or team? Ever protested someone for cheating? Are these guys just on the stick or are they doing something underhanded?
