Our pal Jeff Lee and his dad Fred have spent the last couple of years working on perfecting what can only be described as the most bombproof IRS center section available today for 5th generation Camaros. Called the “Hammerhead”, this piece has been tested (in the aluminum version) behind a 900hp engine in a late model Camaro without incident. The guys are also offering a nodular iron version of the piece that could probably withstand a direct hit from a thermite grenade if the aluminum housing can live behind 900 abusive horsepower.
What’s cool is that Fred and Jeff have teamed up with the professionals at The Driveshaft Shop to offer three different levels of Hammerhead depending on your car and just how badly you are going to beat on it. With the ability to match both the gear ratios you want, the axles you need, and options regarding specific driveshafts, these guys have you covered from front to back, literally.
The fifth gen Camaro’s IRS has made it the strongest performing Camaro in history and allows the car to do things that no other pony car has even been able to think about until today. The problem is that while the LSx engines that power these cars can be modified and made to create massive amounts of power with relative ease, it all goes for naught if you blow the rear end out of the car. The Hammerhead is a simple and complete solution to that problem.
These babies were designed by a guy with 40+ years as a pattern maker and they have stood up to lots of prolonged abuse. Pricing has not been announced, but we’re expecting that word soon. Until then check out the release and scroll down for photos of the new Hammerhead center section for fifth gen Camaros!
Here’s the release from Hammerhead –
There’s no modern muscle car more popular than the 5th Generation Chevrolet Camaro. Today’s Camaros are the perfect platform to go faster and build insane amounts of horsepower, that is except for the factory independent rear suspension (IRS). The factory rear housing is the car’s weakest link and that is why HammerHead has created the new standard in high horsepower independent rear suspension technology: the revolutionary HammerHead 12-bolt housing.
The HammerHead housing is part of three different complete bolt-in replacement kits for the 5th Generation (2010+) Camaro. HammerHead housings has teamed up with industry leader The Driveshaft Shop and will offer kits featuring race proven DSS axles rated up to 1400HP as well as their bulletproof driveshafts. The HammerHead 12-bolt housing features more strength and less horsepower loss than a 9-inch Ford housing. And by using a 12-bolt, the HammerHead allows a larger selection of gear ratios, posi units, and racing spools when compared to OEM style differential options.
The HammerHead 12-bolt housing comes standard in lightweight cast aluminum but is also available in nodular iron for extreme performance usage. Kits are available in three stages; from bulletproof to indestructible, and the HammerHead has been prototype tested in a 900-plus-horsepower Camaro with a 35-spline WaveTrac posi unit. Best of all, the HammerHead kit is an easy bolt-in installation, and is available with an optional carbon fiber driveshaft or WaveTrac 35-spline posi unit.
The HammerHead housing will be available for viewing on the Hot Rod Power Tour.

Bulletproof Stage 2
