The big news from Ford in 1957 was the introduction of the Skyliner model in the Fairlane series. The Skyliner was the world’s first, and for a long time, only, mechanical retractable hard top. The Sunliner that is shown here was the standard convertible soft top model of the same car.

Although the Skyliner got all the headlines, it sold 20,000 units to people brave enough to trust it’s endless miles of wiring, hinges, linkages, and other mechanical goodness. Folks who wanted the same experience without all the complaxity opted for the Sunliner model, and they did so at a good clip as Ford moved nearly 78,000 of these in 1957.

The hand operated soft top was certainly nowhere near as stunning as the self-stowing hard top, but it was exponentially less complex and virtually guaranteed that you’ve never be driving to the dealer with your roof half hanging out in the breeze.

From any angle this is a wonderful looking car and these made some pretty good hay on the NASCAR ovals of the late ’50s. The good looking raven haired woman in the tight sweater don’t hurt a lick either.
