Cool Old Press Photos: Dodge’s Jet-Age Fins, 1957

This week’s Cool Old Press Photo veers away from the Ford family that we’ve been hovering around. We’re sharing our first nugget of Mopar goodness with you.

This is a press photo highlighting the cool styling present on the tail end of the fullsize Dodge cars of 1957. This photo happens to be of a Lancer, and the look of the woman pictured is the absolute epitome of the late ’50s in America, but we’re not here to critique fashion.

Check out this rump! There are all kinds of things happening here, fins, bulbs, reflectors, cool/creepy exhaust outlets. It rules. The only thing that really catches our eye in a negative light is the fact that the actual fin looked like a glued on afterthought in some sense, but visualizing it missing results in pure design catastrophe.

Our favorite part is the line in the press release touting the functionality of the fins. We can imagine the boys in advertising doubled over in laughter typing that line out after a three martini lunch.

That reminds us, we’re thirsty. Enjoy!
