Cool Project: Washington Cam Company Recreates Cam For Wright Bros. Engine

Delta Cams is a Washington-state company best known for reworking factory cams for customers. We’ve used them in the past for engines that have a very limited aftermarket cam selection. They’ll take your factory piece and work their grinding magic to your specs. Little did we know they do kick ass one-off work as well.

Working off drawings and plans that are more than 100 years old Delta is making, from scratch, a camshaft for somebody who is recreating a 1910 Wright Brothers plane. The plane was a racer that actually crashed before it got to race.

The engine is very unique, as the cam only actuates the exhaust valves. The engine used the vacuum created by the exhaust leaving to pull the fresh air and fuel mix into the cylinder. Apparently there isn’t an intake valve at all. Weird and cool.
