We rightfully bemoan the loss of manufacturing here in the US with some regularity. Because of that, when we see a story about a small company, especially one that makes high performance and racing parts, we need to share it. This profile of SP Crankshaft in Irvine, California, is cool.
As we were reading the story and learning about the business which makes racing cranks and other small run high performance crankshafts we were thinking that it was a very boutique-like outfit. We were blown away to learn in the story that the small company generates revenues in excess of $6-million per year. When the owner mentions that the cranks run from $2,600 bucks to $26,000, it made more sense.
While the picture is certainly not an overall positive one, we need to celebrate the victories like SP Crankshaft. If they can make it in what is probably the most manufacturing un-friendly environment in the United States it gives us hope that the companies in better locations can do the same!
