Dale Coyne Wins First Race in 558th Start

It’s the best story in motorsports and it will be for the whole of the 2009 season, and chances are you’ve never even heard about it. Dale Coyne Racing’s win at last weekend’s IndyCar race at Watkins Glenn, New York, was historic. It was Coyne’s 558th IndyCar race as either an owner or a driver and it was his first win.

This is a man who began his racing career in the 1970s running Showroom Stock, and he did what we all dream of doing. He climbed the ranks and rungs, some slower or quicker than others, until he was ultimately competing at the highest levels of open-wheel racing in the United States.

Justin Wilson was driving Coyne’s entry and he managed to out-muscle the field and became the only driver not working for Ganassi or Penske to win a race since 2008.

Here are two looks at the story. The first is a more newsy account of the win that can be found here at RacinToday.com

The second is a great editorial piece celebrating the accomplishment and giving some great and well deserved praise of Coyne and his dedication to racing. It’s here, from Peter DeLorenzo at AutoExtremist.com.
