Craigslist Find: A 1940s Sears/Allstate One Wheel Trailer

Craigslist Find: A 1940s Sears/Allstate One Wheel Trailer

When Chad sent this link to a CraigsList ad featuring a very old Sears/Allstate one-wheel trailer we were interested because we never knew the little guys existed before. Sold through Sears stores and catalogs in the 1940s and up they were designed for small cars and light loads. We think that the little carts are neato!

Design wise, things couldn’t be any simpler. There are two bars in the front that attach to the bumper area of the car and a big caster wheel on a swivel under the back. The trailer does not articulate, it follows the rear of the car directly. That could get ugly if the driver fails to account for the increased tail swing of the trailer.

Being that there is no suspension, the sidewall from the single tire is it. We’d guess payload capacity is somewhere south of 1,000lbs, and judging by the fact that we’ve seen them mostly hooked to VW Bugs, you’d not want any more, or anything close to that in there anyway.

Like all things weird and mechanical, there’s a website dedicated to these trailers. Click here to check out SingleWheel.com

The one we found needs work, but it would be a neat accessory to have behind your restored wee little car.
