Next weekend we’re heading to the Lake Morey Resort in Fairlee, Vermont. It’s home to the Goldenchild Nationals, one of the premier ice snow machine drag races in the world. There are classes that will traverse the all-ice 1/8-mile course in the mid 4-second range at over 140 mph. We’ll be bringing you full coverage. We wanted to see what type of stuff could be showing up so we searched the Duluth, Minnesota, CraigsList for ice drag snow machines. We found a cool one!
This sled is a 650cc Polaris which has been thoroughly modified for drag racing. It has a spiked track and lots of engine modifications that qualify it to run in the Open Modified class. The eninge has had the head shaved to bump compression, it has been bored .040, and after the shave the heads got a port job.
Of most interest to us is the fact that there is a lot of fine tuning done with these sleds, like drag cars, to get them down the track. Guys used different gear ratios, they weight the clutched differently, and really do most of the same stuff the automobile drag racers do. We’re excited to see these guys thrashing on junk like this!
Of note, there is a wide open Pro Mod class which will be contested next weekend that will see sleds running on alky, and sporting motors with 80 mm turbos, cranking 500 horsepower! It’s BangShift.com approved!
