A 4400 Mile 1971 Big Block Corvette, For Sale On Craigslist With An Interesting History.

A 4400 Mile 1971 Big Block Corvette, For Sale On Craigslist With An Interesting History.

Normally low mileage Corvettes are the kind of thing that you see sold at auction, or listed in one of those high end cars for sale magazines that we never buy but leaf through in the airport shops. This 4400 Mile 1971 Big Block Corvette seems to have some history according to the ad, and if it’s the real deal it claims to be has some awesomeness in it for sure. According to the ad, this 1971 Big Block Corvette has 4400 original miles on it, and although it doesn’t have the original engine in it, it does have a replacement big block that was put in back when it was nearly new. It’s got all the parts that make me giddy, like 4.56 gears, an M22, and side pipes. Come on, this thing has to be a riot to drive. The condition is near mint, if you can get past the fender flares. I can, so someone buy this for me for Christmas.

According to the seller, the fender flares were GM Parts back then, and were put on along with the Alcoa slot mags, back in 1971 when the car was put together to be a drag car. Hence the lack of miles apparently. The full ad text is below, along with lots of pictures and a link to the original ad.

We’re pretty sure there is a lot more to this story than we’re getting. And we mean that in a good way. According to the ad the car sat in the back of Doc Meyers Auto Supply for many years. Doc Meyer Auto Supply is located in Jefferson City Missouri and the original Doc Meyer died several years ago. How or why this Corvette got out and all of that is a mystery to us, but we’re sure it’s a cool story. We actually emailed the gentleman that has the car listed, and are hoping to get with him to get more of the story. For some reason this is one of those listings that just got us excited. When we find out more we’ll let you know. We’ve made notes with some of the photos below. Check them all out.

The ad doesn’t say if the paint is original, but it does appear to be the original Brands Hatch Green that was available in 1971, so it probably is.

Original Listing Text:

I am selling a 71 Corvette. 454 4-Speed m-22 with 4.56 rear end. This car was build as a drag car when it was new with minor modifications. Car has 427 insignia on it including the emblems on the console, and a GM L-88 hood and GM side pipes with the side pipes mufflers for the 67 Corvette. 4400 original miles. NOT 44,000 miles. It has 4400 true miles. This car has GM fender flares bought from the chevy dealership back in 1971. These were made for states like California that did not allow tires to extend past the fender. They are fiberglassed on in a way as to not damage the original body if the car was to be taken back to original. Does not have the original engine. The original 454 was replaced with a new 427 at the Chevrolet dealership when the car was new. The 427 was pulled and replaced by a 454 to make it a better street car. The wheels are Alcoa brand, also put on in 1971. It has side pipes and fender flares and is a very unique car. Interior is in excellent shape with only one spot on the drivers seat that needs addressed where the piping is torn. This is the car that sat in the back of Doc Meyers auto supply for many years. I am open to reasonable offers. any questions please text.

Years ago if you asked us if we would ever approve flares on a Corvette, our answer would have been “No Way!”, but now we kinda dig them. Not on all Corvettes mind you, but on some. This thing looks super clean and nice and the flares are well done. The pictures aren’t super close up, but we can’t see any evidence that they are trying to delaminate.

Radio Delete!!!

The interior looks virtually MINT.

This kind of very light surface rust underneath speaks to the fact that this car must not have been driven much, or at least not in any of the bad weather times.

This is the part that is most disappointing to us, which is that the original engine isn’t in it. We can get around that, especially if the story is as cool as we’re hoping for, but if we had ti we would definitely do something about that air cleaner, the spark plug wires, etc. These cars have chrome covers that go around the distributor and such and we’d have to grab a set and put on it.

Overall this 4400 Mile 1971 Big Block Corvette seems pretty cool. Hopefully we can find out more!

really, really like this Corvette, just unoriginal enough to modernize a little, clean up and drive, could be a great car if detailed out

There is no such thing as a “radio delete.” Radios were always an option, not standard. Deletes would be things like heater or disc brakes (Olds did this for a very short time, FDB were standard on the 442 and you could delete them and get Drum brakes instead which weighed less than FDB)

Most Corvettes dont look good with fender flares but I always have liked this body style with those flares, wheels and side pipes. I love this car. Only thing I dont care much for is that it is green, but I could sure get over that pretty easy. Also since it dont have original engine, why not paint it any color I want.

Looks like the Eckler Flares dad had on his ’73, looked good with the Vector wheels…
    Nice clean find!

how could it be a drag car without driveline hoops around the rear driveshafts?

I have a Chevy parts catalog from that era that lists GM flares… GM published articles about how to prep them for racing as well…
