Bring Your Geiger Counter: This 1965 Chevrolet Suburban 4×4 Has Patina That Shouldn’t Be Erased!

Bring Your Geiger Counter: This 1965 Chevrolet Suburban 4×4 Has Patina That Shouldn’t Be Erased!

Eighty-three years, the Chevrolet Suburban nameplate has been in use. From it’s humble beginnings as a wagon body on a truck frame to the top-of-the-line Chevrolet SUV that’s sold today, the Suburban has been a pioneer in just what a closed up Chevrolet pickup can do. Over the years the role the vehicle has played has changed, from a straight up work truck to a people mover with plenty of comfort. This 1965 example, without question, falls into the “work truck” category without question…bare interior, minimal paint, V8, manual transmission. Oh, and the name of the original owners still painted on the doors:

Yeah…good luck faking that patina. This Suburban is based out of the Tri-Cities area of Washington State, which houses what is now known as the Hanford site, which used to be the area formerly known as the Hanford Nuclear Reservation. Hanford housed the first full-scale plutonium production reactor in the world and produced the plutonium that was used in the Trinity test nuclear device and the Fat Man bomb that was detonated over Nagasaki, Japan. While most of the reactors were closed down by 1971, the facility was being used as a functional nuclear power plant all the way until 1987. This isn’t faked in any way, shape or form…this is a legit ex-government vehicle that’s up for sale!

While we doubt that there is any real problems to worry about because of it’s previous occupation (don’t mind the paint…the Tri-Cities area is effectively a desert climate, regardless of the green hills in the background) bringing a Geiger counter with you to check out the Chevy wouldn’t be a bad idea. But really, the only thing that should be glowing are the dash lights. 4×4 Suburbans weren’t common in 1965…only 433 were built…and cleaned up, this could be a really neat rig. But we wouldn’t clean it up on the outside at all. Give people something to think about at the next car show you attend!

Too utterly cool. The price is…well…for that, I think I might bite. This would be a fun truck to save for a guy in the right position.

Yes 4×4 very rare, a neighbor had one with a Powerglide originally from the Camp Pendleton Marine base. Sold it due to wife-hate and rust issues with were not that bad for 2K while I was on a trip out of state…argh…not that I needed more cars.

I’m headed to the tricities this weekend. If it were $2000 I may bite. There is another one in a yard there. Rotted to the core.

How things change. GM now sells more 4×4 Slow-burbans every week than it sold in a year back then. Current monthly sales exceed all of 1965 Suburban sales.
