Criagslist Find: This Big Block Powered 1974 Nova Has Rake For Days!

With 1970s and early 1980s style street machines being en vogue right now, the “arse up” look is sorta kinda in. Back in the day people accomplished this by juicing their air shocks to max capacity, putting in different spring hangers to force everything higher or running different springs in the back with more arch or ones that were taller and stiffer in the case of coils. The man selling this 1974 Nova has taken things to an entirely new level. We’re not sure we can remembering seeing a car with as much rear altitude as this one has. Chrysler drag cars running the company’s famous “super stock springs” have a momentary look similar to this when they launch but it ain’t a permanent position like the Chevrolet before you seems to be in.

The power for the car comes from a 454 that is topped with a tunnel ram and a pair of carbs. That engine is breathing out through some side pipes because that’s pretty much what it should be breathing out of if this is the look that you’re going for. We’re not sure what the rear end is, although there is a photo of a narrowed Ford 9″ housing. It doesn’t seem like that is in the car though because there’s not enough tire width to make it worth. The wheels are Weld Draglites and the rear rubber looks to be a set of slicks from the photos. We can’t see any treat on them. Can you?

We’re going to take a shot in the dark and say that the ride is probably on the stiff side, slightly bouncy, and that rear visibility is perfect if you are working air traffic control but probably not so good if trying to judge the distance of the car behind you when backing up, unless that “car” is a Kenworth. The hood has both a tall cowl and a forward facing scoop which violates one of our BangShift laws. If this was ours, we’d flat hood it and use the forward facing scoop to show off the tunnel ram which was nicely painted it appears.

The car looks solid and with some not too tough changes you’d have a big block Nova for burnouts and entertainment. You could always leave it like it is if you wanted to and please feel free to admit if you want to in the comment section. (This should be interesting).

Thanks to Scott Brown for the tip.

The interior has a groovy 70’s ‘Cheech & Chong’ vibe and I love the removable quarter panels to speed up the tire changes!!!!!

talk about driveshaft angle induced vibration. This thing would be horrible at anything over 50.

And no one noticed the removable drivers side 1/4 pan?

I saw some jacked up cars in my day…but only one that could give this thing any competition…the builder of this thing is truly…speshul.

Id: I never jacked my car that high back in the day . . . but all this self-rightous negative reaction is tempting me to experiment again with a little more rake.

Ego: But remember how it induced handfuls ‘o understeer . . . Moderation, please.

Super-ego: VIOLATION! Thou shalt avoid the “stink bug” stance and build to suit the community.

Oh, what to do . . . what to do?

Strange, I was expecting a 307 in the engine bay, for the full effect. At least that’s how I remember them being done in the late 70s.

I miss the day of the jacked up ass on a car, hate these lowered cars they drive these days, they drag on a dog turd ! Nothing like Gabriel Hi Jackers and some Mickey Thompson M50s, some Glass Packs or Cherry Bombs, Hurst 4 speed, Holley Double Pumper carb etc. Now that is what it is all about !! Relax all you tuner fans and get back into American Muscle !!!

I agree with you 100% that would straighten the problems out and like you say drive it like you stole it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

love the stink bug stance, had a car very much like this in high school in the mid 80’s…. this thing needs just a wee smaller tire and about 4 inches lower in the back…. 295-50-15 bfg’s would be about 4 inches shorter, so there ya go. and no hood…. yep, Id rock that poo all day.

” honey, I might start growing my mullet back out….” 🙂

Price = “don’t try to lowball me”. You could put a straight axle under the front and call it a gasser?

I bet the airshocks leak…so you overfill them for day 1… day 2 is about the ride height that you may not necesarily want but will clear the tires that are sticking out of the wheelwell, because we all know that the wider the tire the cooler. Day 3… forgot to stop at the “Service Station” to fill up the air shocks, and now the wheelwell is gobbling up my tires. Naww never happened to me : ) Could actually end up being a fun car. If you replace the front bumper and grille with a 72 and earlier, ya might lose 500 lbs off the front end.

It’s definitely that HS kid’s car from 1983. But, like many HS kids, they ignore crappy driving cars in order to look cool to their friends. Things change, then they don’t.

The “stance” is to distract you from the bad spray can pimer job + lack of door handles + wipers.

Really?? ” That engine is breathing out through some side pipes because that’s pretty much what it should be breathing out of if this is the look that you’re going for. ” maybe read a bit more closely…
