Rough Start: 351 Cubic Inches In A 1991 Ford LTD Crown Victoria That Has Train Horns!

Rough Start: 351 Cubic Inches In A 1991 Ford LTD Crown Victoria That Has Train Horns!

Crown Vics come in two flavors: cop and old person. That’s the way it’s been since full-size cars fell out of favor to mid-sizers. While everyone was snapping up Fairmonts, Fox LTDs and the Taurus as if that was the second coming, the LTD Crown Victoria (yes, that’s the full name…they didn’t drop the LTD part until 1992) was just tooling along, happy to be the great big box with the Blue Oval plastered on it. They sold enough to make a little coin and updating the looks just meant a new nose and tail treatment. Once the cost of the Panther program amortized, every Panther that Ford could sell was free money. There really was never a sporting model to the pre-aero cars. There was the cop-spec, but it was full Malaise-spec horsepower wise with a 302 that was just enough to work with.

But if you knew how to check options boxes, you could secure a 351 cubic inch V8 into one of these cars. It was an option in the Mercury Grand Marquis, but on the Ford side of the house, you either had to be buying in fleet bulk (read: cop) or you really had to know who to kiss up to. You also had to fork over an extra thousand bucks for the gas-guzzler tax to the EPA, and you were sitting with one of the last carbureted cars you could buy in the States.

So, on a hunch, we’ll agree with the seller that this LTD Crown Victoria was a fleet car, that the 351 is probably OEM, and that if you want cheap entertainment, this is where you look. The 351 Windsor has had a go-through and an Edelbrock carb is running the show. An air compressor is in the trunk for one reason: the four train horns that are behind the grille. Because sometimes, you really need to get the kid in the too-low BMW to move his ass at a turn signal. You get some good bits (custom exhaust, upgraded suspension front and rear, two sets of wheels and tires) and some cleaned up interior bits. For the Rough Start kick, you’re out $4,200 for the car, another few bucks for the air conditioning belt at the nearest parts shop, and when you get around to it, you’ll need a new motor for the passenger/front window. That’s it.

You aren’t going to pretend you’re a cop with a Crown Vic this old, but you can have a ball in one just the same.

Even at this age, it can feel cop car enough. I don’t know why but I always liked this body. Even when it was new there was something retro about it, the tail light shape helps, a little bit sixties.

I always wanted to see one of these with the full Marauder treatment. Could still happen!

I had one of these in an 86. Drove the wheels off of it. I sold it to a friend at 150K and he ran it over 250K before selling it. Great car.

Just checking – there IS a motor under all those pipes, tubes and general shit under the hood.

    Great car and great price!
