Rough Start: Finding A Sea-Green Grand Prix In The Middle Of Iowa

Welcome to Ames, located dead-set in the middle of Iowa. If there’s anything there besides cornfields, I’ve yet to learn about it. And located in the middle of Ames is this gem of a 1977 Pontiac Grand Prix.

My father had one of these when I was a teenager. Rusting, with exhaust that sounded like it meant business, I was in love with how much of a beater it was. I got the chance to borrow it once, and when a friend of his called him, telling him all sorts of lies about how he had just seen his car crossed up with smoke rolling out of the back tires, I was never allowed to drive it again.

This Grand Prix has lived a much more comfortable life than Dad’s old GP. Originally from Florida, the car somehow meandered it’s way to Iowa, where it has remained in a daily-driver status for it’s entire life. It appears to be well taken care of, according to the pictures. It isn’t without faults, as the seller admits to some rust repairs and a couple of minor faults. The 350ci V8 still wakes up, the car still drives, and the air conditioning and the cruise control still work.

For the price of $1800, you can’t beat the condition. For the remainder of the $5000 budget, I’d simply fix things and maybe modernize the tire selection. This thing is cool as it sits.

It’s amazing what you find when you look around. What do you think?

I dig the fact that its a no vinyl top car from the start..makes cleaner lines for a road carver..everything from a 94-96 Impala ss or 9c1 will bolt up under there..but then you will get a 5 inch bolt circle.Even some an would make it a better cruiser, and i could also live with the 15 inch rallys..many chices.

That color is nearly an automatic fail. Why are the survivors always green? Other than that…100% YES!!!

I had a 74 with a 400. I LOVED that car, even if it had the red velour interior. Black exterior, half vinyl roof, with a sunroof. I’ve been looking for another one for years. It wasn’t real quick off the line, but I drove it from Toronto to Calgary in a bit over 30 hours. It ate up highway miles like nothing else I’ve owned.

Hell yea. New wheel / tire combo, tune it up n swap an O.D. trans in and drive the wheels off it.

A guy here has one tubbed with wheelie bars. BBC and a blower through the hood cage all black and drives it on the street all summer. It is just beautiful. It is slow as a snail but impressive as hell.
