Rough Start: Is This 1981 Ford Fairmont Futura In Your Future?

The Ford Fairmont held such promise. The Fox Mustang was just a side effect of the Fox platform, really…the Fairmont and it’s Mercury Zephyr twin were supposed to benefit the most from the Fox chassis, which was to take the place of the old Falcon setup that had underpinned a plethora of models from the early 1960s to the end of the 1970s. But the Fairmont was two things: plain and boxy. Unless you went for the Futura model…then you got a funky shape with a “basket handle” B-pillar and a sloped tail section that was supposed to be more sporty than the standard two-door sedan. The Futura was originally a planned Ford Thunderbird adaptation, but the T-bird went for a different body shape…which didn’t work out too well.

You already know that Fox chassis means massive potential in the right hands, so let’s look at the base car here. This 1981 Futura is halfway through a five-lug swap and the parts to finish the job are ready to go. You’ll still have to sort out what is taking the place of the inline-six under the hood, but we bet that you’re already envisioning a 347 stroker taking it’s place. Do you make it corner, drag race it or just keep it on the street? And do you keep that funky plaid interior? For two grand out the door, you’ve got plenty of money left over to get to work with, even on a budget deal!
