Rough Start: A Rally Sport Camaro Hiding In Maine Needs Your Help

Maine: The most northern and eastern section of the Continental United States, surrounded by seawater and Canadians, with a small path to New Hampshire acting as a connector. I wasn’t sure what drove me to take a look here for the next Rough Start car, but I gave it a shot. Most of what I found were trucks and the usual mid-90s cars that I would ignore no matter what, but seeing a 1979 Camaro Rally Sport made me stop and investigate.

When it comes to Camaros, I love the second-gens the best, but absolutely hate and detest the rubber-nosed ’78-’81 cars. I can’t explain why, I just don’t like them. It’s a personal thing, nothing more. This particular Camaro has a lot that counts toward redemption. For starters, it appears unmolested, complete with the mid-‘70s Rally II wheels. The owner claims it’s driven often, and judging from the slightly faded paint and the small rust holes in the door and fender, I don’t doubt it for a second. The 305 has 86K miles on it, and judging from the pictures, has never been apart.

The interior is a surprise. Yeah, there are a couple of issues, but overall, I haven’t seen a cleaner unrestored second-gen interior since I was five, riding around in my uncle’s ’77 Type LT. It would be a small investment to clean it up, though from my view I’d just put a headliner in it.

My suggestions? I’d patch up the rust and clean up the interior, then get the engine some upgrades to get the power up mildly. It’s nice to see a Camaro of this age not seriously hacked up at this price.

Can’t resist a Disco Camaro? What do you think?

  1. Turbo Regal

The most popular car in my high school parking lot in 1985, bar none. Followed closely by the 73-77 Cutlass Supreme.

Rusty Northeastern cars = no, thanks!

I always liked the 2nd gen Camaro/Firebird. They had good style and lots of aftermarket support..

The steel bumper 74-77 Camaros in the two-tone colors have been growing on me. I even like the race striped ones better.
