I’ve recounted many times before the story of my cousin Vance, his 1973 Chrysler Newport, and how he used to take me on hell rides on side streets in Colorado Springs when I was a young kid. I might have been infatuated with my uncle’s 1975 Camaro at the time, but the Camaro never went anywhere…meanwhile, Vance’s Newport was teaching me all the joys of being shoved deep into the seat while speeds easily three times the limit posted were being exceeded. If my mother ever knew of these events, she would’ve blown her top, but lucky me, she didn’t. Sadly, the Newport is long gone and so is Vance, but the memories still stick with me…the sound of the secondaries opening as tons of Chrysler’s biggest and brashest closed distances into fractions of what they were supposed to be.
That’s why when I found this 1973 New Yorker for sale, I had to give it a shot. Even today, you have to keep a watch out on Craigslist for a bigger car if you have interest. A demolition derby guy would have a crisis and a mess to clean up if they could get their hands on one of these C-body Mopars…a big-block powertrain and the unbelievably beefy construction would not play nicely with a field of Crown Victorias, but in this nice a shape, this New Yorker doesn’t deserve that fate. Nor does it need to be beaten like a rented mule at the hands of a power addict. Fall is cruising weather, and if there is one thing a big boat Mopar can do, it’s cruise.
I have an issue with McTaggart, Giving the demo guys an idea. OK so you must be a Mopar hater. Let them demo guys use a Crown Vic X- cop car . There are a tone of those on Govdeals for sale. Big old C body slab sides are a great ridding car and hard to find in that condition. And with a part trade for something .This unit would be in the ball park money wise
I will never forget that time back in high school in the early 80’s when 7 or 8 of us piled into a friend of a friend’s green 440-powered ’74 or ’75 New Yorker which had been sideswiped hard on the passenger side. The driver pulled off the most outrageous, seemingly effortless power slide, a four wheel drift to end all with that howling big block gulping mass quantities of air through 4 open throats. It did not matter that we were crammed in there like it was a clown car, that car was NUTS!!! I have never looked at the big Chryslers the same since.
