Craigslist Pick of the Week: Basket Case 1978 Turbo Buick

In 1978 Buick sold a ton of Regals. Nearly 250,000 of them went home from dealers with happy new owners. Of that 250,000, 30,508 were equipped with a turbocharged V6.

The tubocharged cars could have been had with either a 2bbl or 4bbl carb and made either 150 or 165 hp depending on which direction you went with the fuel mixer. The really zooty factory piece on these cars was the electronic spark control that came with them to keep the engines from detonating themselves to death. It used a knock sensor to pull timing out. This was heady stuff in 1978.

This week’s Craigslist find is one of those 30,508 Regals and it’s pretty much a wreck. The car appears to have been living in a field for some time. Interestingly enough the owner points out that the “electronic turbo box” is bad. That was kind of the least of our concerns after initially laying eyes on the car.
