Back in 1979, BMW had Andy Warhol paint an M1 race car that was to be run at Le Mans. Dubbed the “art car”, the machine went on to finish six overall at the race. It was the only time it saw the track. This 1977 VW Scirocco is a lot like the art car. Well, actually it isn’t, but the paint job is almost the same.
We have a soft spot for racing VWs as we were involved in road racing a Rabbit back in college. The seller claims that this car has been a race car for 15 years, so it has some laps on it. It was also featured in a Euro-car mag back in the ealry 1990s. We see a license plate on that back so it may be street legal as well.
Winding up that sub-2.0L engine with the Webers wide open would be fun on a road course or at the autocross. Due to the paint we’d probably be doing it with a bag on our head, but frankly, that’s never slowed us down much in the past.
