Don Schumacher Racing is the most successful professional drag racing team of all time and that’s not by a small margin. The team will reach a historic milestone on Saturday evening at the 2020 Denso Spark Plugs US Nationals when either Jack Beckman or Matt Hagan win the rain delayed Summernationals funny car final. It will be the 350th NHRA win for DSR and that’s a mark which has been a half century in the making. This film shows the first win for Schumacher at an NHRA event when he took down the field at the 1970 running of The Nationals.
The competition, the cars, and the history here are fantastic. Keith Jackson makes the call and while he changes Don into a Shoe-maker rather than the pronunciation he prefers, it’s no big thing and actually adds to the coolness of the whole scene.
There is one question we have to ask that we’ve not yet. Why does Don have Larry Dixon’s fire jacket on? He has two fire jackets on and the top one says Larry Dixon. We’re guessing that the tune in the car was so spicy that he was guessing another layer of fire protection was a good idea!
