While we were crying about the seemingly imminent demise of the legendary Milwaukee Mile, we failed to realize that there is actually some good news shaping up on the race track front. That news, as was pointed out by Jim Pedly of The Sporting News, is that historic North Wilkesboro Speedway, one of the original NASCAR tracks, and a place that last saw action nearly 15 years ago, will once again open and host racing in 2010.
It is certainly easy to get stuck on the negative stuff these days with everything going on in the world, so it is important to point out that there is some good junk happening as well! The bad may outweigh it, but at least it is there.
Although the Milwaukee Mile is a far older track, Wilkesoro Speedway’s significance to racing is about the same. The Milwaukee was there from the beginning of closed course auto racing. Without it, there would be no North Wilkesboro Speedway. North Wilkesboro on the other hand was one of the earliest and most revered tracks in NASCAR history. They’ve both seen lots of racing over the years.
Pedly’s piece is well done and it serves as a good reminder that fights to keep tracks alive or in the case of North Wilkesboro, revive them, can work. It may take years, or nearly decades, but they can work.
