We have to thank our bacon loving tipster Tommy Kreisler for the goods on this awesome find. The car is a 1956 Pontiac Pathfinder, which was a model produced only in Canada and like all the other Canadian Pontiacs, it has an engine that we here in the USA would consider native to a Chevy. More specifically, it has an engine that we’d most closely associate with Chevy trucks because it is the beefy, solid lifter, 261ci inline six mill that grunted many a heavy load over the years. This interesting combo of Pontiac styling, Chevrolet power, and some neat historic lettering makes us weak in the knees. We’ve never seen another one and we’re not beating ourselves up over it because only 1,300 were produced and they were only sold in Canada.
One thing we’re not clear on is the White Rose Oil logo on the back of the Poncho. It is unclear to us whether or not the logo has been there for the long haul or if it was added at a later date. The fact that the seller denotes that it is hand painted leads us to think that the logo has been there for some time. Just a hunch. The current owner has had the Poncho for 16 years and in that time has gone through the bumpers and other trim for rechroming, and added stuff like a new windshield. He said that in 16 years, he’s driven the car/truck about 2,000 miles.
On the mechanical side, there’s a Mallory ignition, an Offy intake with a pair of Rochester one barrel carbs on it, a split Fenton exhaust manifold that leads to dual exhausts, and a cool Wayne valve cover and side plate. Equipped with a three speed manual transmission, the clutch has also been replaced along with assorted other mechanical pieces. Long story short, this thing has been very well maintained and taken care of.
How big a pain is it to get a car into the USA from Canada? Someone here needs that! Bidding has topped $17,000 at this writing with the reserve not met.
