Craigslist Find: An Awesome 1960s Era Half Scale Indy Car Go Kart…Or Is It?

Craigslist Find: An Awesome 1960s Era Half Scale Indy Car Go Kart…Or Is It?

While this item is list on Vermont Craigslist  as a go kart, we’re not sure that it is. The machine looks like a half scale 1960s Indy car and judging by the size of the slicks on all four corners, the juice brakes on the front end, and the size of the driver’s compartment, this may be more than a toy go kart. There are no photos that depict when the engine is but in one photo there is a small inline fuel filter visible. The engine cover is small enough that may be covering a v-twin style engine or a one lunger. We just don’t know. We do know that there is some serious rubber on the corners in the form of wide Hoosier slicks on some cool rims. This thing must be a hoot to drive because with all that contact patch, it has to corner like a monster. Depending on the engine we’re not sure why thing little bastard couldn’t be flogged on the autocross course. The chrome roll bar looks to be in perfect shape and it certainly seems like there is enough room inside for a full sized man to fit and drive it.

Has anyone out there ever seen one of these? Know what powers it? Were they ever raced against one another? Is it is go kart of something more serious, like we suspect? We need answers to these questions!

looks a lot like the “Chapparal Grand Prix” cars we had at a track here in Garland back in the 70’s. If it is, that will be a 500cc Rotax twin with a snowmobile looking torque-a-verter variable belt drive. The uncorked version was good for 80mph but not on their track. They had two versions on the track, a very slippy convertered one and another that would hook the converter up and actually use the engine’s power. You had to make several laps of what seems like 47 seconds IIRC and then they would let you drive the faster car.

Beagle you’re spot on. There’s a track in Kelowna that I hit up as a kid (just a few years ago) that had the same cars. The body on this kart is a bit older styling, but the chassis layout looks the same. Those rotax twins would get the cars rolling pretty quick with the good clutch setup like you mentioned!

A friend and I both ran 54’s at the Malibu Grand Prix in Pasadena running just one lap each. Took a tip from Roger Penske and rode the break pedal with my left foot. It worked.

Looks just like the first generation Malibu Grand Prix cars from the 1970’s that we had here in California
