Thanks to Joe Haber, we have this perfectly awesome and super rare 1969 Jeep Camper Special to share with you. Yes, this was a factory available package you could have bought from a Jeep dealer in 1969. Yes, it was about as popular as polka dot paint at a Harley rally, and yes, it is even more amazing to see one with the camper. How amazing? Six are known to exist in the world.

Here’s an excerpt from CJ5Camper.com which tells the story of these unique machines, “The camper was an El Dorado unit that was manufactured by the Honorbuilt Division of Ward Manufacturing. This camper was mounted in the “bed” of the CJ5, extended beyond the back of the CJ5 and had its own axle, with brakes, that carried most of the weight. It also extended above the front seats of a CJ5 which is where the main bed was located. It could easily detach from the Jeep through a small opening on the floor of the camper. A large pin would be inserted into that opening and connect the Jeep drawbar to the camper frame. The camper was an option that could be added to any factory CJ5 but it was recommended for Jeeps with the Buick V6 Dauntless engine and 4.88 gearing.”

The camper sleeps four in a level of comfort that some people familiar with the inside of a state prison could probably relate to. It has a stove, heater, 20 gallon water tank, stainless steel sink, ice box, a toilet, lights, and even a “wardrobe area”. How all of that is packed into the little box on wheels behind the Jeep is impossible to visualize, but that’s what the ads said!

We think that this thing rules and is probably scary as hell to tow down the road at highway speeds with any sort of crosswind. We know just the guy who should buy this he works for some hot rodding magazine….
