This is a car you may have seen on BangShift before as it has appeared in some Goodguy car show coverage we have run in the past. This is a recreation of a really neat old drag car that was obviously called, the Hurri-Cain II. Campaigned by Bob Cain back in the day, it was backed by the family dealership which was located in Wilmington, Massachusetts which is north of Beantown. All steel and with functional doors, the car ran an injected hemi on gasoline. It competed in different categories like B/Altered, A/FX, and wherever else it would fit at AHRA meets, big open events like the Super Stock Nationals in York, PA, etc. This is not a restoration of the original but rather a near dead-nuts replica hand crafted by the seller. To see the work that was done to build this car is to truly appreciate it. Did we mention that the dude also races it? Yes, this isn’t a cackler or a show pony, this car gets hammered on the strip. Elapsed times are not given in the ad but the seller lists the 60′ times as being down in the low 1.30s, so it gets rolling when the green light comes on.
We can’t say why the car was built this was originally but there are some factors to consider. According to the seller, the Cain family got their hands on an early 1967 Barracuda body in 1966 due to their connections within the Chrysler corporation and set to work altering it into the state you see it here. When this car was bring built, the first flip top funny cars, backed by Mercury had not been released yet, Bruce Larson was hauling ass in his 1966 Chevelle that had an injected big block Chevy and working doors….but a ‘glass body, and the “rules” of what a funny car should be hadn’t been written quite yet. According to the seller, this car was run from late 1966-1969 up and down the east coast and in Canada.
Believe it or not, the dude who built this car actually got the wheels off of the original back in the day when it was being dismantled, so the wheels on this car are the actual pieces on the Hurri-Cain II that terrorized strips back in the late 1960s. From what we can tell, the car ran low 9s back then, which was cooking for something on gasoline, bodied in steel, and not supercharged. The original car was converted to a flip top ‘glass body and “modernized” in 1969, hence the inability for the “real” car to be restored.
How much was the body altered? The nose was stretched 15″ and the front axle is actually 25″ forward of the stock location. Out back, the rear end was moved forward a foot. That’s radical and even more radical is that the seller did all of this work again in his own shop. In the photos it looks flawless although he says it has some rash on it from racing….which makes it even better in our book. The hemi now runs on alcohol using the correct Hilborn injector on the engine. Alky is used because without a cooling system it is far more forgiving than gasoline.
This car is a freak in the best sense of the word. Built during a time when the idea what a funny car “should be” it stands as one team’s vision for the best race car they could build. While the car isn’t nationally known or revered across the land, people here in New England remember it very well and this is an incredible recreation effort by the seller. His metalworking skills and dedication to recreate a childhood memory and actually race is it amazing and very much worth your time to check out the photos and the ad!

This was my favorite car at New England Dragway back in the day.
Awesome! I was at Fred F. Cains way back when and saw 11 Hemi cars on the front row. Great Stuff ! Thank God someone is brave to bring these cars back. Saw “Country Girl’, Pete Tropiano’s AA/FA, King & Marshall AA/FD, Randolph C/P Hemi Belevedere and Dana Hard,s Nitro ‘Stang. Great stuff! I wanna go racin’. Does anyone where the “Bell Boys” alky car is? Does anyone remember “The California Corvette” A/MP ?
