eBay Find Greatness: An Original 427 Ford SOHC Engine From 1966 – Still With Factory Installed Oil Filter And Tags + Unobtanium Extra Intake

Ed Nicholson is an OG BangShifter and he is a man of the Ford persuasion, so when something awesome regarding the blue oval hits the web he’s always close to being first on the scene. This engine is a perfect example. Ed tipped us off to this 1966 427 SOHC crate engine that still wears the oil filter, plug wires, and other bits that were installed on the line when the engine was constructed in ’66. Hell, all of the original inspection tags and stuff are still there! Adding to the price tag and the coolness is a 2×4 Ford intake manifold that comes uninstalled with the engine. That’s a Ford factory piece as well and we cannot imagine that whole lots of them are floating around for sale.

Speaking from a personal perspective here, I think the SOHC Ford engines were the pinnacle of Detroit’s nuclear horsepower and racing war back in the 1960s. These things as many of you know, were developed in 90 days and destined for NASCAR competition before they had the squash put on them by that sanctioning body. The good news is that drag racers quickly adapted to them and guys like “Sneaky Pete” Robinson, Connie Kalitta, Danny Ongais, Don Prudhomme, Don Nicholson, and a host of others used them to completely terrorize drag strips. The engines ran like scalded dogs on fuel and they were often spun to 9,000 RPM in blown and injected fashion. They had great success on the strips for a while through the mid to late 1960s and then faded off as their rarity didn’t really encourage a prolonged life span. Bottom line is that these engines gave the Chryslers all they could handle and a little bit more during their time in active racing competition.

This engine is listed for $65,000 on eBay. That’s an insane amount of money but where else are you going to score an actual factory Ford piece that is complete and may have zero or very limited run time? Yes, you can build a modern version of this engine but that’s not the same as having one that was actually produced at the factory nearly 50 years ago!

Oh, and dig all the other amazing stuff hanging out around this motor. Looks like a fresh SOHC to the left, the old Holman and Moody box in the background, heads, intakes, whoever is selling this thing has a gold mine of exotic and cool Ford pieces.

    Irony . . . some of the same Bangshifters who froth over this rare, historic bit of SOHC unobtanium hold to the current crop of two-valve pushrod OHVs (i.e. the “Government Motors” LESS) like Charlton Heston’s “cold dead hands” on a Saturday Night Special.

    And they’ll categorically “dis” any cheap and available SOHCs and DOHCs . . . .

    I guess that’s forty-five years of Bangshifting “progress.”

      you are correct sir. because of the SOHC AND DOHC ENGINES SUCK!!! never worked!!! the only company that has it right is G.M. AND THE LSX ENGINE LINE!!!

          Whoa! While I agree with the comments about the awesome Terminator engine (which sadly Ford failed to install in more applications), I can’t really support the lack of civility.

    I grew up in Covina, CA, about 50 miles from Holman and Moody. My neighbor had three of these in the late 60’s that he used for his drag boat. He brought the boat back from the races one day, backed it in to the garage, and hooked up the battery charger. Thirty minutes later the garage is in flames and all three motors gone. Even as a young teenager then I knew something really rare just vaporized. There was nothing left worth salvaging.

    There are multiple companies making Re-pop SOHC stuff these days. It is possible to build one capable of taking far more abuse than an NOS one would, for considerably less $$ than the price of this NOS crate engine……all depends on what you are trying to do……..and how deep your pockets are:):)

    ‘Remember one sitting on a rolling (?) stand in the customer waiting area of the parts department of Hatfield Ford in Indy prior to November ’65.

    Price? I think it coulda been ~ $3,000.

    I worked at Holman Moody Marine from 68-70, building ocean race motors. One day the boss asked us if we wanted to buy any SOHC 427 engines. They were on a pallet, complete with carbs, exhaust manifolds, clutch, bell housing and starter and alt. Price was $1000.00 each, free shipping to us on the truck that came down from Charlotte (to Miami) every week. At 135.00 a week and a new house, I couldn’t swing it…

    I had a couple of these nos many years ago. I installed the 8v motor in my Cobra in 1990 where it still resides and sold the 4v motor in 2002 because a fellow bugged me with stupid money until I sold it. The engine has had a few minor issues but no drama and really is a lot of fun…..
