eBay Greatness: The Rolling Chassis From A Factory Backed Chevette Funny Car! Seriously!

eBay Greatness: The Rolling Chassis From A Factory Backed Chevette Funny Car! Seriously!

You think we’re making this up, but we really aren’t. Back in the early 1980s, Vauxhall (think English Chevrolet) actually commissioned the construction of two Chevette funny cars complete with one piece fiberglass bodies and all. The cars were powered by small inline four engines and as best we can tell through scouring the interwebs, ran 11s. They were apparently used as promotional pieces for the company to help sell Chevettes. We think that they’re beyond awesome. Well, one of the cars is still racing (or at least was a couple of years ago) and the other seemed to have been lost to history, but here it is. The seller does not have the body, but he does have the complete rolling chassis with all the suspension, rear end, and plumbing in it. He claims that this car was last run with a small block Chevy engine and has motor plates to handle mounting that, but the car could obviously be modified to fit whatever engine you wanted. We dig the seller’s idea of a turbo Ecotech or something along those lines.

Sitting at just 88 inches in wheelbase, the car could certainly become a handful quickly if crossed up. That doesn’t bug us, in fact it makes us want to shove even more motor into it just to see how out of shape it would get! The chassis needs to be updated in some areas in order to earn a tag according to the seller but we’re guessing it needs gussets and other small pieces touched up and not a total overhaul. There’s even a Turbo 350 in it so whoever buys the car can get right at it by dropping in an engine and hitting the strip!

The chance of recovering the other Chevette funny car body is probably zero, so you are on your own as far as that goes. What would you put on it? If it were us, we’d go looking for an Opel GT or something along those lines to modify into a shell. There has to be a few of them kicking around in Europe for short money…right?

Would be good fun and yes Marra1 I live less than an hour from where it is for sale as well. Looks like a very early Santa Pod photo as well

With all the horsepower that can be had out of late model 4 cylinder engines these days it leaves the powerplant choice wide open.

There are still lots of those old chevettes about here in New Zealand so a fibreglass replica body wouldn’t be too hard.

If it was closer to me I would be into it.

how about a Cosworth F1 4cyl turbo?……………get in , sitdown , shutup and hang on!

You’ve got your facts wrong, the chassis that’s for sale isn’t ‘the other car’, it’s the old chassis from Steve and Liam Maltby’s car which is the only survivor, but now has a new extended wheelbase chassis.
