Green Giant: 1972 Plymouth Fury Gran Coupe – Everybody Pile In!

Green Giant: 1972 Plymouth Fury Gran Coupe – Everybody Pile In!

Fun story: up until I came into the picture, my mother’s daily driver was a Plymouth Fury in about this same shade of green, with a worked-0ver 440 and mag wheels. It was only after this little bundle of anger came into this world that she decided she needed something more practical, like a four-cylinder 1982 Mustang. Hm. My mother might be the least-influential individual regarding my car disease, but it’s safe to say that she at one point in time had good taste in machines. I say that because the last car she had that I knew of was a Kia Optima that was rusting out  in the rear quarters.

You don’t get any more brash than with an early 1970s Chrysler C-body. They had varying degrees of luxury depending on which version you bought, but all exuded muscle out of a full-size package with a strangely aggressive but classy look. The Fury was the most muscle-like out of them all, with hidden headlights and some design cues that came straight from the Road Runner. Sure, it tipped the scales like a fully loaded dump truck, but the cure for the weight problem was simple: big-block. Power was down, but not completely out in 1972, not even for the 400ci version.

Smaller, more overall useful vehicles seems to be the current trend. Eff the current trend…park a car that you could stuff the neighbor’s Yaris in the trunk of. This big Plymouth is the right amount of middle finger and the right amount of old-school class.

Love! I had a ’72 Gran Sedan Fury in ’73. An old man had bought the highly-optioned car, and got scared of the (phoney, government-perpetrated) “gas crisis”, and sold it to me for only $2,200.00! Only mine wasn’t your grandpa’s green, mine was a beautiful copper metallic, and tan interior. It was an awesome ride!

    I had a 71 dodge Monaco, 2 door ,383 4 barrel
When I was a teenager.that car was a beast. Big fast and comfy. Pass just about everything out there but a gas station.

I had one in gold, my dad had a coupe deville Cadillac, my fury was much bigger the back seat came in handy on dates!

My grandfather had one like this one in B5 blue 4 door hardtop 400 engine loaded power everything really surprised everyone when he bought it … he traded in a 68 Fury 1 4 door post with a 318 and 3 speed on the column vinyl floor he was known for buying plain cars … he said it was his retirement present to himself

Love this car! Had a ‘73 Fury coupe in high school and just sold my ‘71 Gran Coupe. Good thing that beast isn’t around here or I’d have to have it!

I drove the wheels off of a \’72 Gran Coupe like this in Geo Storm Bright Yellow in college. I paid $50.00 dollars for it without an engine. Put a 318 in it and went everywhere. That car delivered pizza, commuted back and forth to school, and drove to the Mopar Nats. I stiil miss it.

Sweat Car. From the days America ruled! Unapologenicly America. Bigger was better so keep your Toyotas and Datsuns in Japan. I learned to drive in a 1973 Chrysler New Yorker 440 4brl. It floated down the road like a magic carpet ride. And howeled when you floored it (once you flipped the air cleaner lid so it could breath)
    Keep the classic Mopars coming.

Absolutely gorgeous fuselage styling. One of the best looking chryslers ever. We had a white 76 Newport sedan with a 400. Big and comfortable. I ruined the speakers cranking up the metal.

This thing is awesome!!! Good thing it won’t fit in my garage, otherwise my bank account would be in trouble
