American Motors products always seemed to have a little bit of this and a little bit of that in their parts, in their design language, and in their attitudes. They built smaller economy-minded cars when the country was all about chrome-laden barges. They built trim sedans when the musclecar era kicked off. They built the only other two-seater V8 to represent the U.S.A., pissing directly into the Corvette’s cornflakes. They even went so far as to shake hands with the Italians and create a mid-engined sports car that would look the famed Ford GT-40 dead in the headlights in a beauty contest. They had a budget like a teenager stopping in for a burger somewhere and a design team big on creativity, and for that alone, AMC has our respect. But we tend to focus on their hits…the SC/Rambler, the American, the Rebel Machine, the AMX and Javelin. Every now and then the weird pops out and we find a Pacer that might work or an Eagle that could make a great middle finger to every CUV-driving dork who thinks they have the best thing ever.
But look at this 1960 Rambler Cross Country wagon for a minute. First off, does thing thing look properly pissed off or is it just me? I’m not that big on fin cars of the later 1950s, really, but the whole design language of the car says “angry”. The outside has that patina look that you either love or hate, the interior has been kitted to the nines with a custom leather interior, fresh gauges, and Vintage Air. The powertrain stays true to the All Makes Combined joke via a crate motor 350 and a 700R4 automatic, and a power brake system has been retrofitted to the car. So…looks old, drives properly, has some grunt, and should feel like a comfy sofa in a refrigerator inside? Here’s my wallet.
Up until this car, I thought Suzy Bauter’s “Flare Witch” Rambler was the car for me. But I’ve been in Suzy’s car…it’s a beauty, but I don’t fit. I wonder how this one would suit me? Actually, better not ask that question. That’s the first step towards ownership, ain’t it?
Nice McT, I like Dare to be Different, this works for me.
Like the Dare to be Different thing, does seem a bit pricey
Looks like an early 240 Volvo wagon
Dare to be different with a 350 Chevy? Please. A, Indy-built 401 AMC would have been different. Nothing with a sbc is different.
Agreed, Gary.
OVERPRICED
Waaaaaaaaaaaay OVERPRICED.
“Patina $urvivor”.
.
Although I’m not keen on the 350, they are becoming a vintage piece as opposed to a dime a dozen LSs.
I would like to know what suspension system is under it …
Beautiful Interior ….Love the Leather
The only thing I would (re-think) would be the wheel and tire choice…
It would be very hard to duplicate the build for the asking price…& when the (Patina Look )
is over …looks like Minimal Body work would be needed for a Re-Spray
350 – 700r4 combo very reliable… if it has a Sniper FI under the air cleaner , my guess that it would be able to pull 20 plus MPG …
Looks like a Perfect Ride for Power Tour …
The other thing overlooked … Value… Drive this car 3-4 years… Very easily sell for what you paid for it … try that with a 2020 anything !
If you think it is expensive, build one.
It may have helped people find the ad if the eBay seller spelled Rambler correctly on the listing.
