The American Way 1970 AMX Was Customized In 1975 And Never Changed – Street Freak Meets Country Music – eBay Found!

The American Way 1970 AMX Was Customized In 1975 And Never Changed – Street Freak Meets Country Music – eBay Found!

There were lots of regrettable automotive things that happened in the 197os. For a long time it was the decade that we all loved to hate. Like picking on a fat kid with toilet paper stuck to his shoe, the 1970s were everyone’s punching bag. Then all of a sudden, we started looking at Pintos and Vegas and second generation Camaros differently. Viewed in the context of its time, the 1970s were an important decade that showed hot rodding and the car culture could survive direct attacks on its existence and that even in the darkest of times, we’d all make it through. That’s mostly on the mechanical side of things. On the paint/body/creative side of things, the 1970s were wide ass open. From vans to wild paint schemes on cars, when people couldn’t go faster they went louder visually. Hence is the reason for the car below to exist. This kids, is The American Way an otherwise normal 1970 AMC AMX that is swathed in the most 1970s mural, paint scheme, color combo, and interior we have ever seen on a car like this. Some of it we would gently scrub with 80 grit sandpaper and other parts strike us as being completely awesome.

The whole stars and bars deal on the reverse opening hood was inspired by a Hank Williams Jr album. When this car was customized in 1975 (it was bought new in 1970 as a 390/4-speed car buy a guy who probably wanted to haul ass) Hank Williams Jr was tearing up the charts and falling off of mountains. You read that right. Hank Williams Jr fell off the side of Ajax Peak in Montana during an August 1975 trip. None of that has anything to do with this story other than the fact it is entertaining to think about someone falling off the side of the  mountain and living to tell the tale.

The interlocking red and blue stripes down the side are perfection. The light blue turbine style wheels are so ugly that we love them. The side pipes? This thing would be ugly and naked without them. The interior? We’d black light that mother to death before sitting inside, but assuming it is clean and free of foreign matter and debris, we’d get in there to see how it feels. On hot days that interior has to be terrible, but in the winter it is probably toasty warm. Either way, it looks pimp.

Hey, we know this thing is odd, but it is odd and perfect at the same time. If someone today tried to recreate this look, it would be horrible. Since this one is period perfect and basically a time capsule from 1975, it is as right as rain. Would you cruise it? Were the 1970s really like this? Did you have a car with a name on it?

….To be totally perfect…it needs to be signed by Hank Jr. I think it is very, very cool….it’s sure a lot better than all the fake, ‘period’ & ‘correct era’ cars & wanna-be gassers running around

What does “The Real Heartbeat” on the quarter panel mean? The Heartbeat of America ad campaign didn’t start till the mid 80’s

What is interesting is that just a few of those 70’s “street freaks” are still around/turning up. I am guessing that the majority of them ended up in the salvage yard. I keep looking around to see if I can barn find one.

bitchin, i would totally rock that car…

it would seem from the air cleaner and the different script on the “real heartbeat” the car was “updated” in the mid 80’s. neat stuff

The car was built in the ’70s as a show car, it’s cooler to say it was from the ’70’s. Everything points to the mid ’80s as when it was built. The song “The American Way” didn’t even come out till 1980. The air cleaner is from the 80’s. The Heartbeat of America stuff wasn’t out till 1985.
