That old adage, “They don’t make ’em like this anymore”, couldn’t fit any better than it would on this 1980 Chevrolet C30 Camper Special. Forget the obvious cues and just take in what you’re seeing: a pickup truck of modest size, single cab, longbed dually, with tow mirrors that mean business, two-wheel-drive, and a 454 under the hood for motivation. It’s comfortable enough inside, but by today’s standards it’s sparse: just enough comfort to be ok for a trip, but missing enough to remind you how spoiled we’ve all become over the last twenty years. And tell me this thing isn’t a time warp. I haven’t seen one of those hood-mounted deflectors since I was in grade school, and they were kind of passé then!
Who would appreciate this Chevy as-is? Maybe Lohnes…he likes utilitarian trucks and if I remember right, we both share an appreciation for the standard cab, longbed pickup truck. You could spice up the 454 and make it a muscle truck of sorts, but I think that’d kill the vibe by a wide margin. The older front clip is worth keeping (1980 had flush-faced grille setup with large single square headlights.) I’d look into an overdrive swap or a GearVendors unit and headlight upgrade and after that, leave well enough alone…paint, deflector, and funky green-ish shag carpet included.

Seriously, what’s up with that carpet?

NICE TRUCK !!
not to be too picky Brian, but, the headlight/grille treatment you speak of was optional… nice article about a time capsule truck tho….
The mudflaps have to go. It’s fine to have functional parts on it, but with a logo that it doesn’t deserve? Same stuff makes us all laugh at ricers. Plain ones, or possibly a truck repair shop logo, but not a full, unearned logo. May as well be stickers for a turbo it doesn’t have.
Had a 1980 jammy 2whl drive she had square head lights single seal beams at that. 1tons are always last for the up grade on front end till the falling year just like today chev /Gmc 1tons Don, t have interchangeable front ends with the half tons .and in canada we have some different front end parts than are American cousins and they almost look the same on the new p.u. dodge and ford are the same small changes make for bald headed parts men I’m the body shop.2019 rams sports there saying will only be available in canada. Paint grill, bumper and handles.. I guess we will wait and see on that one.. the 1 ton chevy now that low buck car hauler. Just eats dinosaurs like a fat woman in Vegas smorgasboard. .
It has only 51K miles on it because it drinks it’s weight in fuel every month.
The 454 has that giant sucking sound every time it rolls away from a light.
