How about a super rare $50,000 aluminum big block Chevy for your project car? That price may not be accurate though. The starting bid on this amazing 1970s era Yenko ZL-1 engine is $50K so if there is more than one bidder out there, the price may be even higher. This is an interesting engine for a couple of reasons. The first is that while it is a Chevy big block, it wasn’t actually produced by Chevy, hence the Yenko name.
According to what we’ve seen, Don Yenko acquired the rights to the ZL-1 engine (or at least a license to produce them) after 1969 when Chevy discontinued the program. Yenko has his own blocks cast in both water jacketed and non-water jacketed versions, the non-jacketed blocks were designed for racers who wanted big displacement engines. There were some other tweaks from the original Chevy design as well, but this motor, as the seller claims, was rated at 600hp.
This engine looks to be brand new, and there’s good reason for that. It has never been in a car, has never been run, and still contains the original break-in oil. Who knows why or how it has survived this well for this long, but it has, frozen in time. It is complete, right down to the rare 1050CFM 3-BBL Holley carb that it wore when built by the folks at Don Yenko’s shop.
All of the other stuff needed to make the motor complete is included as well. Literally this thing could be bolted into your car the day you buy it. The seller is even throwing in a Muncie M21 transmission just for good measure. He may even buy you lunch when you come to pick the mill up if you play your cards right.
Is the market value for this engine $50,000? Who the hell knows, really. This is the first time we have ever seen one come up for sale in a public forum like eBay, so we’ll be interested in seeing how it plays out. The auction ends this afternoon around 5pm eastern. Tune in for the highest price sniping you’ll ever see!
Thanks for the tip Steve O!
