eBay Find: An $11,000 Renault Alliance

eBay Find: An $11,000 Renault Alliance

When we plugged “Renault” into the search line on eBay we figured that an old 2CV or some other oddity would pop up. We figured wrong. The highest price item carrying the Renault tag on eBay is a 1983 Alliance, which is said to be the first Alliance built at the Kenosha, Wisconsin (former AMC) plant. Without fear of contradiction we can say that the Renault Alliance was a bonafide shit-box.

Our strong claim comes from experiences in our youth involving one of these heaps. Our neighbors had one and we rode to school in it each day. We used to horse around with it at the end of our dead-end street. As kids, and not older kids, we pushed the Alliance up and down the street, taking turns driving like a big go kart. With that being said, we think the car would fold up like a wet cardboard box in an accident.

This $11,000 prize has only 350 miles on it which is probably because that’s when it quit running. Power comes from a beastly 1.4L engine that made about 90 hp on its best day. The engine is backed by an automatic transmission. We literally cannot imagine how tug boat slow this car is because the unit we rode around in had a stick and struggled to move. Since the transmission was probably built in France, it may have blown up after 350 miles as well.

The seller claims that the car has lived in the collections of two museums. It was in both the AMC and Walter P. Chrysler museum. We can imagine that it sat in a darkly lit corner and when the curator saw it the conversation went something like this:

“Hey, is that a Renault Alliance in the corner?”

“Yeah”

“Get that freaking thing out of here…NOW!”

There are some cars that are truly worthless, this is one of them.
