We like to torture ourselves by searching for our dream cars occasionally. One of the cars we like looking for among the fleet we’d love to have is the ’73-’74 SD455 Firebird. They were really awesome cars and they are obviously very rare. We found a factory replacement carb for one on eBay priced at nearly five times what we paid for our C50 project truck.

The seller claims that he bought the carb over the counter from a Pontiac dealership many moons ago and ran it on a 455HO engine. Later he pulled this carb and tweaked a Chevy truck carb when he raced the car. Apparently he did not want to hack up a part he knew would be valuable down the road.

So this begs the question. Would you ever, under any circumstances pay $2,500.00 for a factory replacement carb? Even if we were doing a resto on a SD Firebird we’d have to spend a bunch of time thinking over the value of spending this kind of money on a stinkin’ factory carb.
