In our fury of blog items last week, we missed a good one regarding our coverage of the Evan Knoll trial. If you remember, he spent the summer being evaluated by psychological experts to determine his fitness for trial. According to one government psychologist, Knoll essentially faked mental retardation on a series of tests during his evaluation. Shockingly, his stock has dropped again and this time to previously unknown lows.
According to a story on MLive.com, Knoll claimed that ever since an auto accident in 2004 (which was a single car affair that allegedly involved him wrecking a Viper at high speed) he had been mentally disabled and had other people in charge of his company. Knoll also contended that he had “several” brain surgeries. The problem with this claim is that his medical records show no such thing, so unless they were done by a guy working in the back of a van, they did not happen. He went to the Mayo Clinic in 2006 for apparent brain issues and doctors there concluded that he had been using anti-anxiety meds for a long period of time and may have experienced some after effects from that medication.
Worse yet, the psychologist said that during tests to determine Knoll’s cognitive ability, he scored a 48 or as the doctor said, “in range of mental retardation.” The doctor went on to say that he believed Knoll was faking the test, although he used far more professional terminology.
Over the years Knoll has had mysterious headaches, has claimed to have been involved in a serious dirt bike crash, has qualified for a Top Fuel license and driven Top Fuel Dragsters, and yet he seems to have made an over the top effort to fool the Feds into thinking he was retarded. Amazing.
The hearing regarding Knoll’s ability to stand trial resumes on 12/15. We’ll keep you posted. If Evan does not take some sort of plea before a trial starts, we may actually start thinking he is retarded. Unless he has the most incredible ace in the hole in legal history, the dude is in SERIOUS trouble.
