(Words, photos and memories by Doug Gregory) – Going to this event was almost a spur of the moment thing. I’d been tossing around the idea of going with a friend of mine, Pete Fedorick, and low and behold we went. We saw lots of cool rigs and were witness to some massive burnouts as the competitors fought it out for a…wait for it…..new set of BFGs for the top prize.
The big-tired cars didn’t fare that well, though they sounded good. A ’57 Chevy gave a valiant effort to the point of exploding a tire and mangling a fender. All fell short of the guy in a 454SS Silverado that hammered the pedal with absolutely no regard for the truck or the tires. Eventually both tires succumbed to the abuse and popped at virtually the same instant – sending the crowd into a giant roar of approval. Likely one of the most interesting cars in the show was a LX Mustang with a chopped top and what appeared to be Capri fenders in a package that looked like pre-pro-touring perfection. I realize there aren’t many pictures here, but this is honestly all I have found from this show. More could be lurking in a storage box I’ve not yet discovered. Still organizing and scanning pictures virtually every day trying to archive my silver-based photo era. Enjoy. There will be more.
