(Photos by Zane McNary) – The most specialized vehicles in the sport of drag racing are the aptly named dragsters. They do not turn well, they do not stop well, they do not provide a comfortable ride, and in the case of Nostalgia Top Fuel, they do not even provide a direct line of sight straight ahead. What they do accel at is going damned quickly from a dead stop to 1320ft in a straight line. Altereds are the dragsters rebellious older brother. Conceptually the same machine, the altered uses a far shorter wheelbase, making it tricky to drive and breathtaking to watch traverse the quarter mile, often in a wandering, sliding, near pinball fashion. There were lots of these cars at the 2012 NHRA CHRR. Gasoline burning sportsman machines, injected small block Jr Fuel cars, blown fuel burning hemi powered diggers in Top Fuel and of course the likes of the Winged Express and the Rat Trap in Fuel Altered!
