Breaking News: Speed Demon Runs 401-MPH Exit Speed, Nish Streamliner Breaks

For the past few days we’ve been following the chase for top time of the meet at the 2009 Bonneville Speed Week. It started with three streamliners, then fell to two shooting for the highest mph and a place on the Hot Rod Top Time award. This morning it was the Team Nish Royal Purple car against the Poteet and Main Speed Demon.

The Nish car was first to run, and driver Mike Nish was on it like a madman, drag racing for a big number when the 720ci engine kicked out a rod. The car coasted to 281 mph in a 2-1/4 miles.

But then the big news: Kenny Duttweiler tuned up the Speed Demon to 1,600 hp in the turbo 300ci engine, and driver George Poteet just minutes ago blasted a 394-mph run over the flying mile with an exit speed of 401 mph. The engine was on the rev limiter in fourth gear in the Liberty five speed.

It seems that Speed Demon has the top time locked up. The team is now deciding if they want to put the car in impound for a change to back up the SCTA record in the morning.

We’ll keep you posted here at BangShift.com.
