Cool Gallery (Literally): Hot Rods Running The Infamous “Tail of The Dragon”

(Photos by Mashell Payne-Memories by Mashell) – Each fall member of the Peckerheads and the Greazy Hubcapz cat clubs get together and attack the famous “Tail of the Dragon” which is an 11 mile stretch of US 129 that is on the Tennessee/North Carolina state line. The road has become one heck of an attraction for motorcyclists and car enthusiasts over the years because it is amazingly twisty and a fun ribbon of asphalt to go and test your car’s mettle on…to a point. Because of the fact that so many people are there for purposes other than obeying the local speed limits, the road is now heavily patrolled by law enforcement to keep speeds down and prevent any gnarly accidents. But enough of that…

This year members of the two car clubs braved horribly cold temps and set out on their journey. You’ll see everything from late model muscle like a cool Pontiac G8 (we see you in there Tommy Lee Byrd!) to a really bitchin’ 1955 Two Lane Blacktop Chevy. There are some neat trucks, big cruisers, a vintage Willys, and other neat pieces that made up this group of hardcore drivers. The group was smaller this year because of the conditions according to ace photographer on the scene Mashell Payne.

From our vantage point, it looks like a good time was had by all and there were no reports of citations so whatever fun was had happened outside the prying eyes of law enforcement. That’s the best kind!

This is a great event, and I’ll continue to go with them every year as long as I have a vehicle to drive. This year the G8 was my choice because it has a back seat for the baby, and a heater, but hey, it does a decent burnout. Next year, the Corvette will be back, so Randy (two-lane ’55) won’t be the only one on slicks and skinnies.

Tommy we are so glad you have been joining us and you did a great burn out! I’m sure Randy will be glad! The only bad part of the day was my truck(White F100 Choptop) came home on a rollback!! Starter burnt up but Richard is fixing it now!!

I was there in my wife’s Black and Yellow ’60 Apache pick-up (named Mater by our grand daughter Payton Chevelle L.) with 427 BBC. I plan to be back next year with wife driving her truck and me in my (current project) straight axle ’55 Chevy gasser also with front skinnies and slicks out back.

Thats kool, i love it when gearheads actually drive their cars, Really dig Randy’s 55, just needs a straight axle, and don’t give me that crap bout you can’t drive something with a staight axle on long trips… grow some balls.. i drive my 65 D-100 any and every where, straight axle and all.
