Event Coverage: The 2010 Hunnert Car Shootout from Great Lakes Dragaway, Union Grove, Wisconsin

The Chrome Czars car club of Chicago put on the second annual Hunnert Car Shootout. These are the same guys who host and run the humongo Hunnert Car Pileup retro-rod show. Think of this as a companion event that focuses on wringing out your rod, rather than just showing it. We shot more than 100 awesome drag photos at the event.

The event was a test of man and machine in more than one way. It was hovering in the 30-degree temperature range all day and it was raining off and on. More than 200 cars showed up and made laps on the strip. Because of the conditions, the track was pretty tricky. The guys and girls at Great Lakes Dragaway have been in this business for a long time and they were hustling to both dry the surface, and keep it prepped for competitors.

The event is very cool in the fact that there is some more leniency given to competitors than entrants into the Pileup are given. Some billet stuff, modern wheels, and obviously modern safety equipment was present on cars that required it.

While no national records were set, that’s not really the point of the event. It’s about hammering on cool old junk. Hell, there was a dragster there with a 44ci Crosley engine!
