(Words and Photos by Tommy Lee Byrd) – Feel free to file this in the “better late than never” file, since it has been a couple weeks since the Somernites Power Cruise actually took place. In case you’re not familiar, the Somernites Cruise In is a huge monthly event that completely takes over the town of Somerset, Kentucky. It’s a big deal, and we love the fact that you can cruise the strip afterward. The highlight event for the Somernites crew is called the Power Cruise. Groups of car guys gather at particular starting points, so they can make the drive together.
The Power Cruise started a few years ago, and it changed a bit for 2012. First of all, the date changed to September in hopes for better weather. Another change included a new starting point in Chattanooga, Tennessee, thanks to the involvement of Coker Tire Company. The folks at Coker threw a big kickoff party on Friday night with free burgers and hot dogs, and a big serving of hospitality.
Saturday morning, we hopped in our cars and headed north to Somerset, which ended up being about 4 hours of driving when you consider a couple of gas and rest stops along the way. Pulling into the Cruise In, we realized just how big this Cruise In would be…with nearly 1,000 vehicles already in place. Final vehicle count for the Somernites Power Cruise was 1,736, which is the second largest gathering in the history of the event. From gassers and rat rods to restored classics and muscle cars, the Somernites Power Cruise had big-time variety with small town fun.
CRUISE GALLERY:
Are there any early Falcons or Chevy II’s left that don’t have straight axles under them? Another great gallery Tommy Lee.
In answer to the above question, there was one at the Somernites August Cruise.
