Charlie Westcott Jr vanquished the field at the Mopar Hemi Challenge, contested at the 2010 Holley NHRA National Hot Rod Reunion. His infamous “War Fish” 1968 Plymouth Barracuda managed to out run David Barton in an exciting final round on Saturday. While Westcott Jr. may have won the event, the rest of the competitors put on one hell of an air show all weekend long. Here’s a gallery of Hemis in flight!

These cars have near mythical status in the sportsman racing world and these Hemi Challenge events really draw out the crowds and quality cars. As powerful as these machines are, capable of running very deep into the 8-second range, they still retain lots of factory parts, including a 426ci iron Hemi. Nearly all the racers use G-Force or other racing type manual transmissions to get down the track.

If you’ve never taken in one of these challenge events, it is a must see. These are the baddest factory drag race cars Detroit ever turned out, and this gallery proves that point!
