(Words and Photos by Scott Liggett) – Bob’s Big Boy in Toluca Lake has sponsored a Friday night cruise since the early 1990’s when it was saved from a developer intent on bulldozing the place in the name of progress. The show has been hosted by the Road Kings, one of the oldest car clubs in southern California, ever since. In that time, the cruise night has become world famous. Many gearheads have it on their bucket lists.
But, this cruise night doesnt tell the whole story of the restaurant’s history with the Road Kings. Old timers tell us that this Bob’s was one of three they used to cruise to in the San Fernando Valley. The Toluca Lake location was in between one on Van Nuys Blvd and the other in Glendale. They would cruise to one to the next in the search for cool cars, good burgers, and pretty girls. Sadly, the Bob’s on Van Nuys was the victom of the wrecking ball years ago. The one on Glenoaks Blvd in Glendale was finally shuttered in 2009 when the franchise owners and the corporation couldnt reach a contract agreement.
In the mean time, Bob’s in Toluca Lake has been going strong ever since. So has the Friday night cruise. And, based on what we saw when we sent our contributor Scott Liggett there last Friday night; we are sure it will be around for years to come.
