When people talk about the “magic” of Bonneville Speed Week they are most likely referring to the pre-dawn time when the salt opens and racers who are going to try and set records are allowed access to their cars to prepare for their runs. They come almost two hours before the sun comes up, use the headlights of their push trucks to illuminate their cars and get to warming up engines, making tune up changes, and generally preparing to attack records that are open, long standing, or broken on a near yearly basis. 400mph streamliners sit next to 100mph motorcycles and everyone is working just as hard.
It is difficult to put into words what this atmosphere “feels” like, but it is an intensity you’ve never experienced at that hour of the day. We got blasted in the face with exhaust from a nitro burning, blown, flathead Cadillac….yeah, it is amazing.
