Photos: Action and Bits From The Pits At The NMCA Drag Week Shootout In Houston

(Photos by Charles Wickam) – It was an Unlimited Drag Week reunion of sorts last weekend in Houston, Texas as the NMCA invited a load of the heaviest hitters that competed at Drag Week 2012 to have a race within a race during the organizations Lone Star Shootout at Royal Purple Raceway in Baytown, Texas. Not all of the cars were Unlimited class entries. Todd Maschmeier, Tim Reed, Mike Roy, and others that ran deep into the 7-second zone during DW were a part of the program as well. The headline pair was of course Jeff Lutz and Larry Larson. The two slugged it out in typical fashion and this time it was Jeff Lutz coming out on top. He won the race on Sunday, but more importantly on Saturday night he punched his 1957 Chevy into the 6s finally, running 6.90/215mph. This was both his first pass into the six second zone and also the quickest and fastest street legal pass in the history of North America. That means Lutz now has the quickest and fastest street car on the continent and Larry was the first guy there to shake his hand in congratulations.
