Every five years, the National Corvette Museum suddenly becomes inundated with filled parking lots and cars sporting license plates from just about every corner of North America, and sometimes even further. From the earliest Blue Flame Six-powered machines to the latest and greatest on display for everyone to see, Corvettes are returning home to roost. Starting yesterday and continuing through August 31st, 2019, the 2019 National Corvette Caravan and 25th Anniversary Celebration at the National Corvette Museum is in full effect. Convoys of Corvettes are traveling in from all points and over the next few days, will enjoy events like touring laps at NCM Motorsports Park, a “Party Like It’s 1994 Mixer” event with dinner and music, a Hall of Fame banquet, and even a Jefferson Starship concert.
We nosed in early, while there were still places to park within walking distances of the Museum, and took a quick scope of what was on the grounds. Ok, why lie…I wanted to see if there was going to be any sign of a C8 Corvette at all in attendance. There were a few on hand. I missed the C8 engine test mule that the Museum recently had delivered, but Chevrolet brought out two beautiful display cars that you could get up-close with, and three more were in the parking lot. Then there was the cutaway car with the cutaway engine and transaxle on display in front of the museum to check out!
Considering this is the first time I’ve been up-close with the new rear-engined Corvette, here’s my thoughts: I’m liking the nose shape up to the back of the doors. I’m not 100% sold on everything back style-wise yet. The interior is supposed to have grown a bit for both height and leg room, which would be nice for the driver’s compartment. Not so sure if the passenger will be all that comfortable, but if you wanted comfort for passengers, you would’ve spent the money on a nice Cadillac anyways. Unfortunately, I didn’t see a C8 down at NCM Motorsports Park, so I can’t tell you what it’ll do when caned properly yet, and who knows when we’ll get our hands on one to try out for ourselves. Maybe sooner than later?
