F1 Update: Massa in Stable Condition; Renault Team Suspended for One Race

Felipe Massa, the Ferrari F1 team driver who was struck in the head with an errant spring on Saturday is now in stable condition in a Budapest hospital after having surgery to repair his skull. In other news, the Renault factory effort will be suspended for one race after their car lost a wheel on Sunday during the race.

Massa was traveling at 156 mph when a 1.5lb spring that fell off of Rubens Barrichello’s car bounced up off the track, hit the front of his car, and then smashed him in the head. It struck him partially in the visor. Luckily with the helmet technology that is now in place, the blow was not fatal. Read more from the NY Times here.

The Renault story is an interesting. Team driver Fernando Alonso’s right front wheel came off of his car on the 13th lap of the race and basketballed it’s way down the track. Aside from the recent Massa incident, Henry Surtees, son of racing great and former F1 champ John Surtees was killed in a Formula Two race when a loose tire struck him on the track. F1 is now ratcheting down it’s safety tolerance and because of the incident, the Renault team will be suspended from competing in the next race. Once again, the NY Times has all the details here.
