Lee Iacocca is an icon in the American car industry and he’s actually a “car guy” as proven by the fact that he formerly owned a Ferrari F40. The man who started his career in sales for the Ford Motor Company and rose all the way to the top echelons of the company, who helped Chrysler boot-strap its way off the brink in the early 1980s and who ruffled feathers and mushed toes without fearing the consequences professionally, liked to rip gears in an F40. That’s pretty cool.
When it comes to modern classics, the F40 is damned close to the top of the heap. I remember being about 11 years old when these cars were unleashed onto the world and despite loving muscle cars and trucks, this thing caught my eye and the eye of every other kid at that time. It also caught the eyes of the big kids, the right big kids and the 213 F40s that were brought to America were sold long before they ever reached our shores.
Iacocca was the title holder on this car two owners ago and despite the fact it has been traded around, the car only shows 238 miles on the odometer. The 40 part of the F40 name was there to recognize Ferrari’s 40th anniversary as a company. Another significant fact is that this was the last car that was released before Enzo Ferrari died. With a tiny, 2.9L V8 sporting turbos, the car was able to run up over 200mph and still be street legal, a feat we squawk about still today when new cars can do it. The F40 did it 21 years ago! (Holy crap, 1991 was 21 years ago….aging sucks!)
RM Auctions is going to be selling this baby at their Phoenix auction next week. Unless you are going to show up with about a million dollars to spend, just do like we did at age 11. Get a poster.
Thanks for the tip Paul!
